Based on John McKeand 1742-1792 of Richmond VA and his descendants.

John McKeand

There is much we know and even more that we don't know about our John McKeand. He was born in Scotland in 1742. We are not sure where but we believe it was in the area that is now known as Castle Douglas. We don't know who his parents were or if he had any siblings. We don't know how or when or why he came to the Colonies. We do know that he moved to Shockoe (circa1761) that is now Richmond VA. He married Elizabeth Carter Willis McKeand. John was a cabinet maker and merchant. His business partner was Alexander Buchanan. He served for a period of time during the American Revolution. He was a member of the first Richmond City Council elected July 2, 1782. His business is mentioned in newspaper ads contract records and other public records. It is doubtful that there is going to be much information found on his personal life. John and Elizabeth had 5 children that we know of, Elizabeth Carter Mckeand, Jeannett Mckeand, Priscilla Mckeand, John Mckeand and Willis Mckeand. He died in the year 1792 in Richmond VA and was burried in the St. Johns Episcopal Church Yard.

As any living family history our site is and will continue to be a work in progress. If you know something, let us know. When you find mistakes, let us know. We are always looking for information, pictures and documents of our family.
